Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our six classes of Pre-Kindergarten students, come to school each day eager to learn. For most of these students, this is the first exposure they have to routines, school rules, and academics.
Our students have shown great resiliency this year since Hurricane Harvey hit our town.
The start of school was postponed, many students were displaced, some were not able to start school when our campus did open because they were living in other cities, and some students lost everything they had. Despite all of this, most days the eagerness to learn outweighs the stresses, and we see students wanting to learn and taking pride in their progress!
My Project
Science encourages various forms of communication, skepticism and curiosity, and higher level thinking. The Science Lab materials and equipment for our pre-kindergarten students has not been updated since it was first implemented ten years ago. To encourage communication, research, and excitement for the sciences, cohesive with the Texas Pre-Kindergarten Guidelines, we are looking for funding to supplement and update materials and equipment that is out of date or has gone missing since Hurricane Harvey, in the subjects of Physical, Life, and Earth Sciences.
Science is an extension of everyday life and lessons learned in the pre-kindergarten classroom.
As teachers, we not only have the opportunity, but the responsibility to create memorable experiences that will inspire students interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Ensuring that Science is presented in a hands-on environment is our goal.
Specimens allow our students to research and study the life cycle of different plants and insects. Building blocks allow the students to become engineers and build environments for different animals to live in. Food Shopping Baskets allow our students pretend play opportunities to make healthy choices and build nutritional meal options. Magnets provide hands-on learning experiences to encourage understanding of how magnets act and react to each other.
