I am so excited, and feel extremely grateful to be starting my first year as a VPK teacher/director. I love working with preschoolers, and seeing how their eyes light up when I have taught them something new. I have two classes, a morning session and an afternoon session giving me a total of 40 students. Each and every one of them are special and silly in their own unique way. They are so eager everyday to learn new things and be a part of fun and exciting activities. Giving them a great first experience to school is one of my biggest goals. When they find out that learning is fun, they are excited to come to school everyday. I believe this excitement for learning will create future academic success.
My preschool class is struggling with their print and phonemic awareness. We have been focusing a great deal on these skills to get them ready for Kindergarten, but we have a limited time to focus on these skills in an instructional setting. Our program is only 3 hours long and we dedicate 1 1/2 hours of it to center play. The children would benefit greatly from having a writing center to visit during their center play. In this center they could refine their print awareness, and practice name and letter writing. Having this writing center will give them a great advantage when they enter Kindergarten next year, and strengthen their literacy skills.
