My Students

I teach at a Title I-funded elementary school that also happens to be a feeder school for students with special needs. I currently teach one of the full-day, special needs, pre-K classes and get the opportunity to be the early intervention these students need. My students have a variety of disabilities ranging from mild to severe. Some of their disabilities include autism spectrum disorder, developmental delays, attention deficit disorder, Down syndrome, and oppositional defiant disorder.

My class is an awesome group of kids who just want to have fun learning in a place they feel safe and loved.

For some of my students, this is their first time in a school or structured learning setting and it is my goal to make it meaningful and enjoyable to help build a foundation of love for learning to help them excel in the future.

My Project

These math activities allow my students to build fine motor skills as they are learning the math concepts. The blocks and Geostix will help teach 2D and 3D shapes in a creative way through play, which is the epitome of Pre-K. Where the other activities focus on measurement, patterns, and counting. The Fine Motor Math Centers incorporate those three areas in a more obvious way but use a fun tweezer to work on fine motor skills at the same time they are learning.

Most of my students struggle with fine motor skills and with these activities, they will build muscles in their hands to help get them ready for writing and help them to be more independent.

Including the math aspect is a huge bonus. Often math is overlooked by literacy and phonological awareness but, this way fine motor skills and math can be at the forefront.
