Our students are creative, thoughtful, and full of questions! They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions! They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically. Truly, they are our inspiration!
Our school is located in West Harlem (Title I District).
Our student population is diverse and includes Hispanic, African American, Caucasian, Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian), Biracial, ENL (English as a New Language), and IEP (Individualized Education Program) students. Diversity within our school is something we embrace and nurture.
My Project
In Pre-K, we teach the students that everyone is unique. We all have different and individualized skin colors (we are not just black, white, and brown), we speak different languages, we all like different things, but we are also very similar. It is the things about us that are unique that shape us into who we are. These are very strong messages I send to my Pre-K students. It is also something we strongly believe in within our school community.
By giving my students these crayons that are diverse and represent our skin colors and the paper to draw on, you are helping them be proud of who they are, what they look like, and where they come from.
This message is embedded into everything we do and instead of just having your basic peach and brown to color in skin colors, help me give my students an opportunity to really identify who they are!
