Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are ready to learn! I teach in an English Immersion Pre-K class, and most of my students are in school for the very first time.
Our school serves students from some of the most under-served neighborhoods in the state, and over 85 percent of my students live below the poverty level.
I believe that a student's zip code shouldn't dictate the quality of their education, and I know that my students deserve the best start possible in school. Almost all of my students speak a language other than English at home, which makes our classroom wonderfully diverse. My students are learning new vocabulary words every day, and all of my students learn best through hands-on experiences. Four-year-olds love to touch, move, and explore, and I need more resources for my students to explore their world!
My Project
Reading to preschoolers is one of the best ways that parents can help them learn! Reading a child's home language helps kids learn vocabulary, understand cause and effect, and learn to love books. My students love to read books in class, but many don't have access to a wide variety of books in their language at home. The families in my class have asked for resources to help their children learn!
I want to build a classroom lending library so that families have access to high quality, interesting, age-appropriate books to read with their children!
The majority of families in my classroom speak Spanish at home, and I would love to build a library of books in Spanish, as well as some in English and some wordless books, so that families can spend time together reading at home. The families in my class are very involved and want to do anything they can to help their children learn. Having books in their language will help families feel empowered and motivated to read with their children.
I would love to have a rich library of Spanish and English books to lend to families, including classics like Corduroy and The Hungry Caterpillar, books with diverse characters that reflect my students and their families, and familiar books from school to help children build a love for reading and give their parents the tools they want to help their children succeed!
