This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a group of very bright and inquisitive students with varying abilities from typically developing to classified children with IEP requiring therapies. I work in a very high poverty area, and many of my students consider the classroom their safe haven. The children in my class come from different ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. As their teacher, I strive every day to close the achievement gap by providing them with a nurturing space to call their own.

Many of the students in my classroom have never been exposed to everyday experiences even something as simple as social interactions between peers and adults.

My students struggle with socializing and working cooperatively.

My Project

Pre-K doesn't come with instructions. We are given a set of goals and expectations for our young students and it is up to me, the teacher to get the students to reach those goals. We don't have workbooks or worksheets. Art materials are all we have.

As a Pre-K teacher, I have to create age-appropriate educational activities for the students to learn through creating.

My Pre-K students will work on patterns, geometry, measurement, phonemic awareness, beginner reading skills, counting, adding, and subtracting. We use a lot of art materials every day to help our students learn. We need construction paper for writing and retelling stories for our weekly literacy organizers. We need paint for recreating storybooks, and glue to keep it all together. We start with the very basic skills like drawing a cutting. My goal is to get my students ready to start reading when they move on to Kindergarten.
