My Students
My pre-kindergarten students are usually 4 or 5 years old and experiencing the school atmosphere for the first time. Sometimes they are nervous because they have never been away from their primary caregivers. Mostly, they are excited and curious. They inspire me every day because I am reminded that learning on every level is natural and delighting. I love seeing through their eyes and introducing new ideas and materials with which they can better understand their world.
I use multi-cultural representations so that each student sees themselves as an important and equal part of our class family.
Every child should be engaged and comfortable and everything they see and touch should be educational and welcoming. I want to appeal to every level of learning my students may be on because they all come from different backgrounds and with varying strengths and needs. My goal is to make my classroom a fun and inviting environment.
My Project
Many of my students have spent the majority of their young lives social distancing. They have not had the opportunities their older peers had learning communication skills by going on playdates, hearing books through storytime at the local library or zoo, or by visiting parks and attending birthday parties. Their worlds have been confined to their own home mostly. I have seen a delay in communication skills. Puppets are a great way for children to retell stories, imaginatively interact with peers, and talk through their feelings. The multicultural puppets allow each child to represent themselves and learn about others that may be different than them.
The language skills that can be acquired through imaginative play are unlimited.
In addition to the language skills puppets and dress-up clothes will encourage, the counting manipulatives will help them develop fine motor skills as they learn one-to-one correspondence. Developing these math concepts in a fun and and age-appropriate way can help them master their pre-k goals.
