Many of my students have spent the majority of their young lives social distancing. They have not had the opportunities their older peers had learning communication skills by going on playdates, hearing books through storytime at the local library or zoo, or by visiting parks and attending birthday parties. Their worlds have been confined to their own home mostly. I have seen a delay in communication skills. Puppets are a great way for children to retell stories, imaginatively interact with peers, and talk through their feelings. The multicultural puppets allow each child to represent themselves and learn about others that may be different than them. The language skills that can be acquired through imaginative play are unlimited. In addition to the language skills puppets and dress-up clothes will encourage, the counting manipulatives will help them develop fine motor skills as they learn one-to-one correspondence. Developing these math concepts in a fun and and age-appropriate way can help them master their pre-k goals.
