Pre-K Children Long to Be Caldicott Winners Someday

My students need 3 journals each for our pre-k writing program.

I teach pre-kindergarten in a large, urban, struggling school in New York City. Young children love to write and draw about their lives and what they see in the world around them.They especially like to write in special journals. Our school does not have the resources to provide us with all the materials we need and our families usually do not have the money to purchase educational materials for their children. I love to teach writing to young children and have a seen tremendous improvement when they are given the chance to write everyday and are given positive feedback on their writing. My young students are ambitious and motivated. They would really benefit from these early writing experiences. I would like the children to have three journals to use this year. Lakeshore sells these journals, called "My First Writing Prompts Journal," "My First Draw and Write Journal" and "My Daily Reading Book Log." I have 18 students. Therefore, I would need two packs of each journal. The children will write and draw each day and have their work neatly assembled in one book. The children will look through their journals daily and feel a sense of accomplishment when re-reading their work. The children do not tend to look back on their work when their work is on loose sheets of paper in a folder. They really take pride in seeing their work in book form and will treasure these books for years to come. Parents typically keep these journals whereas they will discard sheets of paper. Two of the journals will be kept in school to use during center time. The children will work on these two journals in the writing center. "The Beginning Writing Prompt Journal" will be used first and the "Draw and Write Journal" will be used next as it is a little more challenging. The third journal, "My Daily Reading Book Log" will be used for work done at home. The children will read a story with their family and draw about it in their journals. The parents will be able to help write the title and author for their children. It is important for parents to work with their children at home and this activity is perfect for this purpose. I am asking that this proposal be funded so that my students can experience the joy of writing and begin writing at an early age. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal.
