Pre-Calculus Students in STEM School Need Graphing Calculators!

Help me give my students graphing calculators so they can succeed in Pre-Calculus and be prepared for AP Calculus and college-level math.

My Project

My Pre-Calculus and Algebra 2 students need graphing calculators to learn math and be prepared for exams that will prepare them for higher level math courses. My instruction leads students to: 1) Gain proficiency and accuracy in the necessary algebra skills and 2) Be able to interpret and decide which skills they will need to use and 3) Learn how to check their thinking and connect multiple representations of functions. We need graphing calculators so that all students can meet these goals.

The only thing that is lacking here is funding.

I've been using the same set of graphing calculators for nearly 10 years. The calculators are starting to malfunction and the print on some buttons is nearly rubbed off. There is no funding to replace this necessary piece of classroom technology and our students do not have the resources to purchase their own. We need this resource so that all students have an opportunity to learn what they need to for college math and beyond.

The school offers a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) program where all students take four years of math, science, and humanities, as well as four years of pathway classes that focus on Engineering, Computer Science, or Biomedical.

Our school serves a high poverty urban community. We are a diverse community of learners coming from many socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. Unlike students in other under-served communities, nearly half of our students are able to access AP Statistics or AP Calculus by their senior year. We are preparing many students of color and low income students for college and careers in STEM fields. We need these calculators for all students to succeed in AP Math!
