This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This past school year, my fourth-grade students at my school worked hard to care for and grow our school garden. With big dreams and even bigger determination, they spent months planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting—all with donated tools and hand-me-down supplies. While the tools were greatly appreciated, many were cheaply made and have not held up to regular use. Even so, our students stayed committed and showed incredible teamwork and perseverance as they learned the basics of gardening and responsibility through hands-on experience.

Unfortunately, the condition of our current gardening setup is making it harder to continue.

The garden beds are falling apart, the tools are breaking, and the overall structure is no longer safe or functional. These challenges have made even simple tasks more difficult, yet our students never gave up. This spring, they celebrated a successful harvest, and many are already excited to help over the summer. Their hard work and positive attitudes have proven that with the right resources, they can accomplish even more.

With support from DonorsChoose, we hope to upgrade our garden space to match our students’ enthusiasm and effort. We are seeking sturdy raised beds, reliable tools built for student use, and a small greenhouse to extend our growing season. These improvements would create a safer, more productive, and longer-lasting outdoor classroom—helping students connect with science, nutrition, and the environment in a meaningful way. Your generosity will allow our garden to thrive for years to come.
