Prairie Flowers for Wildlife Habitat

We need a compact incubator to help germinate seeds for prairie habitat conservation.

Mr. Graham Blackburn Alternative School - Accelere Program
Omaha, NE Grades 9-12

About My Students

Breonna, Donyelle, Maria, Brittany, and Essence are working on an extension to a state conservation project of Nebraska Environmental Trust 14-03-2P Growing Flora for Nebraska Pollinators growing small prairie flowers. Polemonium reptans and Geum triflorum are species that need assistance.

The students have been successful with growing Asclepia tuberose and Asclepias incarnate for Monarch butterfly conservation. These plants are the shelter and food plants for the caterpillars to start their life cycle. The students grow these plants for free and then give them to low developed areas with little economic development for their landscaping. We were featured on “Think It Up” for our 9/11 memorial Day of Service as we created in our certified Wildlife Habitat a memorial area to the fallen. As the students were working on the wildlife area we wanted to increase the biodiversity for the wildlife that are increasing in the area. These students have started seed culture of these small prairie flowers and wanted to offer these to the public for free. In collaboration with Serve Nebraska, Nebraska Academy of Science, and Nebraska Environmental Trust we wish to expand what we can do for service with our community, state, and the nation.

This project has been extension of not only the learning inside Chemistry, Physics, and Physical Science but it shows application of the standards of my district plus the state. We have students utilizing this experience to job shadow nurses at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Perry Initiative. This incubator will give the student a “hands on” piece of lab equipment that is used in the medical area. With our shrinking pollinator and prairie habitat this incubator can create oasis and refuges for this ecosystem in abandon areas for prairie flowers and pollinators. The students work with Omaha School Foundation, National Council of Jewish Women Omaha Section, Arbor Day Foundation, University of Nebraska College of Natural Resources, Cornhusker Motor Club Foundation, and Serve Nebraska to work as a team to build habitats. Students proudly serve as a volunteer with Serve Nebraska as we develop and give the plants to the community.

In Their Own Words

Our goals as students are to use the learning we have attained in Chemistry and also Physics to develop systems to increase our production of plants to the public while increasing habitat. Brittany and I are job shadowing at University of Nebraska Medical Center, plus we are selected for the Perry Initiative studying the medical field. I plan on going into nursing after I graduate. The incubator will allow me to gain equipment expertise in medical equipment growing cultures.

All of us in Mr. Graham's class are encouraged to work on projects beyond the classroom with various organizations. These activities build resumes while also giving a person a voice. The twenty plus students who also volunteer in Serve Nebraska also have various roles in the work. We also have elections to create officers that can represent us in meetings. Mr. Graham's focus is that we develop a goal, the project concept, budget, and even later put the idea into action.

This incubator will allow us to continue our work during the fall, winter, and early spring when our building gets cold. We can continue studying plants as they germinate. Lately, our plants have stopped germinating since the building has naturally cooled to 68 degrees. In the winter, the records we have from last year has the building ranging from 60 to 65 degrees, which is too low for our plants to germinate. Our goal for spring is to have plants ready for new homeowners at Habitat for Humanity.
