Practicing Statistics Like Scholars: Texts to Support Student Learning
My students need an AP level statistics textbook to successfully investigate the basics on their own and come ready for in-class projects and activities!
How can we uncover gender-based discrimination in hiring practices? How does Simpson's paradox help explain racial disparities in death penalty sentencing? How exactly can we create a survey that fairly represents the views of the public?
In AP Statistics, students are preparing themselves to critically make sense of raw data and statistical inference to answer questions like these.
Throughout the course they will develop high level reasoning skills necessary to navigate college and beyond. As seniors, these scholars are acutely aware of the necessity of working at a college level. As members of a Title I school, where 98% of students identifying as African American, these AP Statistics students deserve the resources they need to achieve; they definitely have the drive to use these resources with purpose and make us all proud of their accomplishments.
My Project
These statistics textbooks are necessary to aid students as they further develop the independence they need to be successful on the AP exam and prepare for college level work.
A former student's best advice for her classmates is, "Read to learn, not just to memorize".
She spoke about how the interesting examples and rigorous problems in the text helped her internalize and own the material. In class, we use the textbook for investigative activities, sample AP problems, and evidence to strengthen our conclusions. These texts provide a necessary foundation for the course. Without a text of their own to use each day, students in this course are put at a disadvantage in comparison to their peers.
