My Students
This group is positively one of the most resilient groups of kids I've worked with in all my years of being an educator. Living in rural parts on our island in Hawaii, my kids are able to live without the luxuries of working facilities, functioning equipment, and a sufficient amount of technology. At our Title I school, my kids are faced with financial challenges at a young age. They "make do" with what they are given and rarely do they complain about the condition of the facilities and/or equipment. My class has the potential to motivate and inspire students through exercise and physical fitness and is one of the few classes that promote movement throughout the entire period!
My Project
Let's face it, middle school students have a bad rap when it comes to personal hygiene. I wish to change that stigma this year by introducing them to proper hygiene practices using some of the most basic toiletries such as soap and deodorant. My goal is to educate my incoming 7th graders (and a few of my 8th graders) on how to use deodorant before and after P.E. class. I also want my new students to utilize the facilities in the locker rooms and shower before heading to their next class.
Middle school students should feel positive about themselves especially during a challenging time in their lives.
I plan to issue the soap and deodorant to those who might not be able to afford them and make it available for those who may run out or forget to bring to P.E. Smelling bad should be the least of their worries when leaving my P.E. class. I want my students to have a great experience in practicing and applying proper hygiene. If I teach them now, they'll build good habits which will lead to a more healthy and happy lifestyle.
