My Students
I am a speech and language therapist in a Title I school in Boston. My students are 3-9 years old with diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorders. My students are in self-contained classrooms and receive special education services through their Individualized Education Programs (IEP), including speech and language therapy.
We are a unique school located in the heart of a low-income, diverse, and supportive community.
Within our school, we have 17 self-contained classrooms for students with autism (pre-school through 8th grade) as well as a large general education program. My students have a range of skills and abilities; some are learning early communication skills such as requesting items and building their vocabulary using either their voice or augmentative alternative communication. Others are working on high level social skills and comprehension. My students are wonderful, hardworking children who are excited and motivated to learn! When given the proper tools and support, it is truly amazing to see them communicate!
My Project
This year, the speech therapists at the Joseph Lee K-8 school have piloted a Core Word of the Week curriculum to teach our students Core Vocabulary words. Core Vocabulary is a small subset of words that are used frequently and in many different contexts. Some examples of Core Vocabulary words are: want, go, all done, I, and help. Each week, we target a new Core Vocabulary word. The students are taught to use the word in many different contexts both in speech and language therapy and in their classrooms. Since many of my students have severe communication needs, teaching them these words gives them the power to communicate across their day in many different settings.
My students have been working hard to learn and practice these core vocabulary words.
In order to teach them new words, we have to find fun and motivating materials that will encourage them to work hard to communicate! Many of my students love cause and effect toys or toys that move and make noise! These toys are highly motivating and encourage my students to use the words they are learning! Many of my students also learn through books. For each Core Vocabulary word, we have found story books that use the word many times. By reading these books during therapy and in their classrooms, my students will have many opportunities to practice their new words!
In the last few months, my early childhood students have demonstrated use of some of the early words we have taught them across their day. We are looking forward to building on this vocabulary to give our students the power of communication!
