My Project

As Mr. Rogers taught us, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” Play is an especially important element in supporting children with disabilities in developing social skills. It gives them a way to practice their learning in a fun, low stakes way. Since they may need to practice much more than their typically developing peers, play-based learning makes that extra practice motivating and joyful. It also naturally invites peers to join in.

Puppets are an incredible tool for play-based learning and social skills development.

They give the child opportunities to practice new things as the puppet instead of as themselves, which can make trying something new less intimidating; if they do it "wrong" it is the puppet that might try again a different way, not the child. Puppets can practice empathy and ask hard questions. They can make mistakes and try again. They can be a friend when making friends is hard.

My students are an incredible group of kindergarteners through 5th graders with disabilities. They are clever and curious and always seeking meaningful connections with others. My goal for this project is to bring an assortment of people and animal puppets into my classroom for them to use during social skills lesson and other skills practice to make the learning more joyful and engaging.
