Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is a highly impoverished community that embraces and responds well to any help they can get, because many of them live with other people and may therefore be labeled as "transient" since coming to the states and might have left their families behind in another country, therefore, they have nobody to little family residing in the United States. My students work very hard in the classroom to try and catch up to their peers in all subjects and need every resource they can get their hands on because of such limited experiences in and outside of the classroom. 100% of them are living in a high poverty situation with little to no books in the home. I teach in South L.A. Where all students eat a free and reduced lunch and also is a designated Title 1 school.
My Project
Children will be using these timers in a center during small group reading instruction to time themselves and their partners in reading fluency.
First, the teacher will make a copy of a short passage for each student and they will practice rereading these short passages aloud to promote fluency.
Next, students will monitor their own reading behaviors by jotting down words read per minute using children's timers.
Last, teacher will use progress monitoring to check for reading behaviors, feedback and monitor growth as well as meeting goals and deadlines.
These timers are essential to my students success in reading and so many other areas in their lives such as confidence and self esteem!
