it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a group of diverse, middle school, sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. We are at a Title l school. Most of my students come from a low socioeconomic background. I strive to have my classroom accessible and equitable, but that becomes a challenge when resources are limited.
My students are current and future scientists who are excited to learn about the world around them through curiosity, observation, data collection, and application.
My students are all eager to learn and make self-discoveries in science. They come to school knowing that it's a safe place where they can create meaningful connections with their peers and teachers. They come with little to no background knowledge of the science content, but they are willing and strive to soak up all the knowledge that is presented to them. My students are wonderful young men and women who are ready to take on the world.
My Project
The materials chosen for this project will be used to help students practice science concepts and social emotional skills. At our school, we use FOSS kits to teach science. While these kits are great at delivering the content, they often lack the resources that will allow students to practice at home what they have learned in class. Often times, I will create my own supplemental resources or search online, which have limitations due to the online resource not being created well or needing to purchase a subscription. The selected materials for this project are aligned to what we work on in middle school (chemistry, earth science, physical science, and life science). In addition to science, we have a daily advisory class where students engage in social emotional learning. While the curriculum provided to us is good, the activities are sometimes not engaging enough. Most of the activities provided are discussion based and I would like to have activities that will allow students to read and write creatively while also practicing their social emotional skills.
In order for students to be successful, they need practice to retain the information they have learned in class as well as engage in activities that are interesting and relevant.
