My Students

I teach nearly 600 students from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds, so they sometimes find that they have much to share with me and with one another. The art room is a place where they will find there isn't always a "right" answer. They are allowed to have an opinion and their voice matters! They are learning to illustrate their thoughts with a variety of media.

I tell my students that art is a thought you can see.

My students are learning to explore different materials and relate art to other subjects in order to become more adept at self-expression. Their art room is a place to try things that might not be available to them anywhere else.

My Project

How many times a day do I hear students moan, "I messed up,"? Everyone messes up sometimes, especially when they are trying something new! I am always encouraging my students to look at their drawing mistakes as an opportunity to evolve, but this takes a lot of training! And so many crumpled pieces of paper make it to the recycle bin in frustration!

Dry erase boards and markers are the answer!

In order to help students gain confidence in their drawing skills, I want to provide individual dry erase boards and markers to each student. Students will feel free to work out their ideas, make mistakes and more importantly, try again! Practice makes progress! And we will be saving paper too!
