My 6th graders have not had a normal educational experience since they were in 3rd grade. Due to all of the shutdowns and online learning over the last few years, my students have significant gaps in not just reading and math but in their social/emotional growth as well.
With the inconsistency of the last 3 years, my students are struggling to engage with each other and in what is being taught.
My hope is that I can get my students excited about learning again so that I can help to close those gaps and get them closer to where they need to be before moving on to middle school.
My Project
My students have literacy deficiencies and have lost interest in reading. I am working hard to create ways for them to get excited and involved in reading again. Through an exciting class-wide novel study of two different books that touch on important social issues, I hope to help my students relate better to the world around them and enjoy the language arts skills that we cover. I am hoping to reignite a love for reading in my students.
Refugee is a book that will teach my students about unity, acceptance, injustice, and perseverance.
Esperanza Rising will teach my students about wealth, privilege, grief, hope, and activism. We will dive deep into the vocabulary, comprehension, and themes of the story. The flexible seating options will allow my students to have better opportunities to collaborate and community build.
