This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach 2 groups of "at-promise" minority students who struggle in multiple areas, including academics, attendance, and behavior. This program is designed to provide students with academic and social-emotional support to be successful in high school and provide them with opportunities to develop their leadership skills.
My biggest competition and enemy in the classroom are cell phones and social media; students are simply too distracted to fully engage in their lessons and tasks.
The use of electronic devices during classroom instruction is a challenge that seems to have gotten worse after the pandemic. Students simply do not have the ability to multitask and cannot fully engage in a lesson if they are also using their phones. My idea to help alleviate this is to create a cell phone charging station in the classroom where students can put their phones to charge as soon as they enter class, and they take their fully charged phone with them when they leave for their next class. This is a win-win situation because they will have the opportunity to charge their phones, with the extension cords, which will be attached to the wall with the command strips, and chargers provided with this project, and I will have their undivided attention! This will, in turn, result in higher retention and academic achievement.
