Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from low-income neighborhoods with limited resources and support. They are also recent immigrants from Latin America who are experiencing school for the first time in their lives! Several of them have sensory, emotional, and learning difficulties which make the transition to a brand new country and culture even more of a challenge. Many also live in cramped apartments with many relatives and do not have anyone at home to help with homework.
Despite their struggles, every child still deserves the opportunity to be college and career ready.
I try my best to provide a safe, nurturing, and multi-sensory approach to learning in which each child has the opportunity to shine!
My Project
Throughout this pandemic, I have seen a significant loss in reading and writing skills. Though the transition to digital classrooms has brought us into the 21st century, the acquisition of primary academic skills was severely disrupted (e.g., letters, sounds, numbers, colors, shapes and play).
Children who were in kindergarten during the height of the pandemic have yet to experience a typical school year.
They have been subjected to a tremendous gap in learning the basics needed to thrive in school. Understanding the difference between letters and sounds as well as the physical act of writing them on paper have been a struggle, especially for my kiddos with speech and language delays.
My goal is to provide multiple learning options to have my students acquire and establish a strong phonemic awareness base, aka learn to read. Using the Hot Dots sound flash cards will allow them to have fun, get immediate sound feedback and blend letters together to read unfamiliar words which, in turn, will aid with spelling later on. There are many rules and strategies that need to be mastered before students can successfully read to learn (e.g., long vowels, vowel teams, past tense, pronouns). Children with language limitations often refer to everyone as he or him because the majority of words originate from the masculine form. I'm hoping the His, Her, & Their Fun Deck cards will help ensure my students know the difference and use said labels properly. The cart will allow us to store and transport the phonics activities.
Lastly, the fidget and sensory based prizes from this project will assist children in getting their wiggles out and motivate them to try their best. I want to acknowledge their incredibly hard work through such unique and challenging times. Thank you for reading.
