My students need alphabet sounds teaching tubs, launch & learn language games, and alphabet mystery box to make learning the alphabet a hands-on memorable experience.
My students come from low socioeconomic homes. Many of their parents are forced to work-out-of state to provide for their families while the children are raised solely by one or two elderly grandparents.
While they are with me I focus on their strengths and interests.
I ensure I am creating a warm and loving environment by greeting them with a hug and complimenting them on their shoes, clothing and anything they feel proud of. I know they are faced with many hardships at home with much separation anxiety never knowing when they will see their parents next. But in my classroom is a loving warm environment where they can relax and rely on me to always be there, to believe in them, cheering them on, in their learning endeavors.
My Project
These resources will enable the students in my class to learn the alphabet through hands-on experiences. Years ago the saying went "drill till you kill," where educators would repeat the information over and over till the students were sick of it. Now, as educators, we know that repeating the same information and having students write countless worksheets, may work for some students; but it is not as effective, as when the students have an opportunity to learn through hands-on experiences.
There materials will allow the students in my class to not only learn the alphabet but to develop a love for learning.
Learning should be made fun and enjoyable especially for young children to keep them motivated for the years of studying to come. Each of the alphabet tubs will teach the students a letter, its sound, the symbol and many objects which begin the letter. As the students master the alphabet they will be able to play different games using the tubs, for instance by mixing the objects together and then sorting them based on the letters they begin with or looking in the tubs to find the object which does not belong. Additionally by having the actual objects which begin with the particular letter, the students who are English Language Learners will be modeled what is begin spoken about and enabled to fully participate.
The expectations for young children are always growing and with these resources we will be able to make their journey of learning a positive, memorable experience.
