I teach in the Bronx in a very large, wonderful school. The teacher's and administrators are caring, dedicated individuals. We all work very hard to give our children the very best education. The children in our school are all eligible for free lunch and many are recent immigrants to the United States.
I would like to implement a monthly class project having to do with character building topics such as honesty, courage, fairness, citizenship, respect, responsibility, caring and self-confidence. Childcraft sells a set of 12 large binders for these monthly projects. The set also comes with 27 student binders with 35 sheets a piece. The children's work can be displayed in the binders and we could read and enjoy each child's work.
The children would be gaining self-esteem as well as working on their writing skills. Early childhood skills such as letter formation, spacing, and writing to share stories and information is essential. Art would also be incorporated to use pictures to express ideas.
Character Education Readers would be used to teach citizenship, life skills, and social responsibility. Childcraft sells a set of twelve beginning readers to teach citizenship and how to get along with others.
I feel that character education is important in the early grades so that children can grow into adults with good values and integrity. The children are so proud to share their work with others and I want to see them thrive in their very first school experience.
