This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students are tired of looking at computer screens for distance learning, and itching to learn about the social movements that came before our current Black Lives Matter era. Through this project, students will be given an individual copy of "One Crazy Summer," an amazing young adult novel about 3 sisters who travel from Brooklyn, New York to Oakland, CA in the 1960s. The sisters in the novel become part of a Black Panther summer camp.

Not only will students be able to read a novel at home, they'll be learning about important life-changing history that happened right here in their hometown, and continues to revolutionize our world to this day.

In this unit, students will learn that young people have a role in every revolution while also improving their reading and writing skills. With a copy of the book at home to keep forever, students will be able to revisit the learning and unit at their leisure. I'm excited to use visual art, writing and poetry to help students engage with this book and the material of the history of the Black Panthers in Oakland, CA. This unit will be supplemented with material from other books such as "The Autobiography of Assata Shakur" and "Black Panthers Speak."
