Power to the Pen: Poetry Books

Help me give my students erasable PILOT FriXion pens and markers, stickers, and Hygloss Colorful Lined Books to create poetry books.

My Students

My students are K.I.D.S. They are knowledgeable, inquisitive, determined, and successful. The school they attend serves a low-income area. For many students, the school is sometimes the most consistent part of their day. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been very consistent. I have great pride in my students. My school is located in a rural area. This year our district has consolidated schools. We have students from four communities combining to create new grade bands and schools.

We are the hidden gems of the school district.

The students in my class are thirsty for knowledge. They come to school ready to learn. Fifty-six percent of the students in the class began our adventure into second grade far below grade level. This hasn’t stopped them from wanting to learn. In fact, it has fueled them. They have big goals, ideas, and hearts.

My Project

A tradition in my class has been to create poetry books as a Mother's Day gift. The moms and/or the special women in the students lives are always very appreciative of this project. Students learn about the art of writing poetry.

I am amazed at the creativity and individuality that students display when writing poems.

Students get practice using vivid language and figurative language while writing poetry. They get to express their emotions and thoughts through words.

To create this precious gift, students first need Hygloss Colorful Lined Books to record their poems in. I'm requesting the PILOT FriXion Colors Erasable Marker Pens, PILOT FriXion ColorSticks Erasable Gel Ink Stick Pens, PILOT FriXion Clicker Erasable, Refillable & Retractable Gel Ink Pens because they will decrease the the time students spend rewriting.

In the past, students had to write their poem in pencil. Then, since they want the words to shine, they had to retrace the words in pen. If a student messed up they had to restart or have errors. The students really put a lot of heart and soul in creating this gift and they tend to want it looking their best. With these pens, students can write a final draft once and have the ability to erase mistakes. The various colors let the students personalize their writing. The markers will allow students to add illustrations with the ability to erase, as needed. A finishing touch to the poetry books will be to add decorative stickers.
