My Middle School is a 40 year old neighborhood school surrounded by numerous mature trees with approximately 1150 students, growing each year. It is a high-need school with around 80% of the students receiving free or reduced lunch.
It has taken on the task of becoming an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, emphasizing the importance of promoting diversity, languages, and knowledgeable world citizens.
For two years, I have been a French floating teacher at Ranson Middle. I currently instruct six French classes from 6th – 8th and have in total around 180 students per semester.
Even though we are in the process of improving all aspects of the school, we lack the monetary resources to buy many of the needed materials (books, workbooks, teacher’s resources, etc.). As a foreign language teacher, with minimal resources, I find myself wanting to promote my students’ language acquisition but lacking the tools. When learning any language it is important for the students to have the exposure to the following areas: writing, reading, speaking, and listening. Therefore, having a listening center will help promote learning and involvement of the students in the foreign language classroom.
Currently, I am in great need of many materials; however, a listening center will help promote the target language understanding and development. Also, as a floating teacher I need resources to be easy to transfer from one classroom to the other without much effort.
In this 21st century, knowledge of a language is essential in all aspects of our lives. As the world gets closer, think globalism, it is important to prepare our students for a bright future. Many countries in the world promote languages from childhood and understand that languages are as important as science and math. Why should we not do the same for our students?
As a language teacher, I want to be able to give my students all the necessary skills and knowledge to compete in our society. Help me do my job by donating to my classroom!
Merci beaucoup!
