Pouring On The Math and Science in Transitional Kindergarten

My students need a sand and water table with sand and play kits to develop hands-on experiences with geometry and spatial relationships, measurement and problem solving.

My Students

Plant the seeds for a strong STEM program in transitional kindergarten! The research is abundant. Children who engage in hands-on purposeful small group play with sand and water develop skills that support many of the Mathematic and Science Transitional Kindergarten Common Core Standards.

Your donation will be used to support a brand new start up classroom.

With the passage of SB 1381, children who are born in October and September receive the advantage of a transitional kindergarten year versus joining a kindergarten classroom. This year provides a bridge year between preschool and kindergarten and an opportunity to gain the gift of time to develop a strong education foundation. Students will be coming from three different elementary schools. Each of these schools has a diverse population with varying social and educational experiences. The student population will be comprised of approximately 25 percent English language learners. Our learning environment is very inclusive. Students from the special education classrooms and the other kindergarten classrooms will have access to donated materials during recess and or mainstreaming. This is an amazing opportunity for children to learn, problem solve, and interact in play based learning.

My Project

Water and sand play is a perfect medium for integrating a majority of the transitional kindergarten common core standards. While playing, a teacher can integrate social and academic vocabulary through targeted questions. The "Sink the Boat!", "Water Play Kit", and the "Waterway Pipe Builders" will facilitate the students to compare, create, and compose shapes. Children will learn to identify and measure and compare objects. All of these toys support the Standards for Mathematical Practice: - making sense of problems and persevering in solving them - reasoning abstractly and quantitatively - constructing viable arguments and critiquing the reasoning of others - modeling with mathematics - looking for and making use of structure - using appropriate tools strategically - attending to precision - looking for and expressing regularity in repeated reasoning

Transitional kindergarten provides me with a unique opportunity to utilize my 19 years of experience as an educator to build a strong conceptual math and science foundation.

Prior to transitional kindergarten, some of these very young students struggled with the curriculum expectations because they lacked social, emotional, and hands-on experiential practice to make science and math concepts meaningful. Rich hands-on experiences will create this foundation.
