Poultry Plucking Party

Help me give my students a chicken plucker to be able to harvest many chickens for our Fun Food Fridays!

My Project

Plucking poultry is a dirty J-O-B but someone's gotta learn how to do it! We raise chickens and ducks on the farm and get lots of eggs from the hens. But unfortunately, there are only so many manly males that we can keep before they start to eat us out of house and home. That's where the Yard-bird plucker comes in super handy. This one will be 1000 times better than the table top one we currently have, and definitely much easier to operate.

Learning where food comes from and how we can put it on the table ourselves is a skill not very many students can learn in school.

COVID sure did a number on society, but it opened our eyes to how much we relied on the shipping industry to bring us food in Hawaii. Being able to have the poultry plucker and accessories to learn how to harvest our own birds will be a lesson that will stick with my students for years to come and give them a tool to becoming self sufficient and not rely on the rest of the world for our food. Growing and harvesting our own food has become like a therapy for all of us, and we are reminded how much we hated distance learning in the peak COVID days! In our class, SEL learning is planting, harvesting and eating!
