Potential and Kinetic Energy of a Cue Ball

Help me give my students the opportunity to learn about kinetic and potential energy and motion by involving real life experiences. By playing pool students will understand how objects move and how objects move in a fun method.

My Project

The last quarter of this year we will be working on our MOTION unit. During this unit. Some of our goals include the following: to make observations and/or measurements of an object’s motion to provide evidence that a pattern can be used to predict future motion; to plan and conduct an investigation to compare the effects of different strengths or different directions of pushes and pulls on the motion of an object; to analyze data to determine if a design solution works as intended to change the speed or direction of an object with a push or a pull and to apply Newton’s Third Law to design a solution to a problem involving the motion of two colliding objects.

Students always need real life experiences to help them understand what they are learning and I can not think of a better way then to play while they learn!

Using a miniature pool table would help students manipulate the different balls with the use of the pool sticks in order to investigate how objects move. Many of our students may never have played pool making this a new experience. Also while being in teams students would be able to practice skills, such as being a good listener and being kind to each other, needed in order to work together to accomplish a goal.
