My students come from a small rural town in southern West Virginia. Our area is one of those facing the opioid epidemic. The kids very much look forward to coming to school, seeing their friends, learning in a loving environment, and participating in music! (I may be biased on that last one.)
Music serves as a creative outlet where they can explore their hidden talents!
With so much weighing on their minds from home, music class allows the students to take a break and express themselves.
My Project
Next year, another school is merging with our school. This will effectively double our school's student body! With a larger student body comes larger class sizes. Currently, my students are sitting on choral risers. I will not have room to seat more students on these risers. In addition to the risers already being crowded, the students have to sit hunched over with their knees coming above their hips due to the shallow steps.
Proper posture is a crucial element when creating music.
These chairs will allow my students to sit in a more comfortable position that is conducive to music learning. In addition to the benefits of proper posture and more comfortable seating, these chairs will allow my classroom to be transformable! If an activity needs room to move around, we can stack the chairs and make use of the entire floor. We can also use the chairs to partner students, sit in groups, or sit it a traditional ensemble formation. The possibilities are endless!
