Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a kindergarten teacher at a Title I school in a primarily Hispanic area outside of Denver, Colorado. The majority of my students are English language learners and many qualify for free and reduced-price meals. Kindergarten is many of my students’ first experience in a school environment, so creating a positive experience right away is so important to build a lifelong love of learning! The COVID-19 pandemic has affected social-emotional growth so this year I am asking for help providing more play-learning opportunities based around creating social interactions, teamwork, and imagination!
My Project
Students across the board have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. After observing gaps in social-emotional growth that need to be met in early education these past couple of years, I have recognized new needs in kindergarten classrooms. We need to provide more room for authentic interaction, language development, and social skills, which naturally lead to more engaged, enthusiastic students who will build a foundation of loving learning. A dramatic play area in my room will create a space for students to act out social situations with peers to build language, knowledge, and social-emotional skills.
