Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach elementary physical education in a multi-culturally diverse and socioeconomically disadvantaged urban neighborhood. I have kids from all walks of life, mostly African-American, Caucasian, and Hispanic.

When I first walked into my equipment closet, I noticed the school was in need of many items.

The school budget is tight and there isn't much left for equipment.

My students come from many types of homes (broken, single-parent, raised by relatives and foster children). When they come to my class, I want them to leave our school remembering all of the fun they had in physical education class and how much wonderful equipment they were given the chance to use and knowing that fitness and physical activity is fun. I want to give them experiences they won't get at any other school. I want them to have experiences no other students have had anywhere else.

My Project

My students need some sort of influential and positive character posters on the walls in my gymnasium. The walls seem kinda of "blah" and boring without character traits, a poster about diversity.

Our school is extremely diverse and we need posters that help embrace our differences with respect and pride.

Too many people focus on how different everyone is instead of taking hold of it and raising it up with some kind of pride. If everyone was the same, the world would be boring. It's our differences that make the world a better place and make a positive difference in the ever-changing planet we live on.
