My Students
There are 18 "little chickadees" working, learning, and playing together in my kindergarten classroom! These precious children enter my safe and bright classroom each day excited to learn through a variety of well-planned hands-on centers, small group explorations, and entire class activities. Through participation in these activities, my kindergarteners develop cognitive and social skills, language abilities, as well as acquire a strong foundation in the knowledge and skills for school success.
My school is a Title 1 school located in a rural area with approximately 450 students who come from a variety of backgrounds and ethnicities, some of whom are homeless or in foster care, and many who come from families that serve at our local military bases.
Because every student demonstrates a natural curiosity to learn, it's my passion to inspire them and guide them in expanding their love of learning while building knowledge, developing their ability to socialize, and engaging in interactive projects that teach while learning to focus on tasks at hand.
My Project
My project "Possibilities With Poetry" will provide my students with the materials they need to engage in poetry through shared reading activities. Each week, students will be exposed to a thematic poem. Students will read the poem using the white board side of the Teach and Store Chart Stand. Using the other side, the pocket chart will be attached with the poem written on sentence strips. Students will re"write" the poem by organizing the sentence strips, placing them in the correct order. Students will also use the word swatters to find a targeted letter or word within the poem.
Many of my students have delayed language abilities and would greatly benefit from the skills that can be acquired through poetry including identifying letters, isolating beginning sounds, recognizing rhyming words, building word families, identifying sight words, improving listening comprehension, and developing vocabulary.
Through these activities and repeated readings, my students would be able to feel true success while developing a love of poetry and school.
