My Students

Helping children see the magic and power of poetry is essential. When children read poetry, they can see ordinary things in new ways. They enjoy the language of poetry and are moved by the emotions and sensory images it creates. Developing a love for poetry enriches children's lives.

Our fourth and fifth graders attend a public Montessori program in Indiana.

They have the opportunity to learn using Montessori materials and methods in a peaceful community. Our school has a strong focus on literacy. We want our kids to love reading and to be lifelong readers!

My Project

Children's lives will be enriched with the amazing collection of poetry books that have been requested in this project. Students will be engaged in a genre study of poetry, learning about the elements and different varieties of poetry through a study of the poems themselves. One of the goals of the project is to have poetry accessible to students in the classroom to enjoy and for students to develop a love of poetry. As part of the project, students will learn about different poets and choose some favorite poems to collect, develop their own poetry collection, develop an appreciation for poetry, and learn to write poetry. Our hope is that this engaging and exciting poetry study will yield lifelong lovers of poetry. As an added bonus, students will be able to work on their reading fluency while reading their poems and their comprehension as they think and discuss the poems, thus improving their reading skills.

The children in my classroom will greatly benefit from having access to this collection of poetry.

Through their study of poetry, students not only gain a love of poetry, they will improve their readings skills as well.
