My Students
As a school psychologist working to support all students in grades K4 - 8th, I'm afforded the opportunity to help students develop social emotional skills to foster social, emotional and academical success. My school is located in an urban district where the majority of students are from low income households and have experienced some sort of trauma. As a result, many of my students face incredible challenges inside and outside of the classroom. Despite these challenges, I am amazed everyday by their resiliency and motivation.
My Project
Our school believes in PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) which rewards students for exemplifying positive behaviors in the classroom and throughout the school building. At Lafollette, we believe in shifting our mindset away from punishing students for their misbehavior. Instead, we strive to recognize, encourage and foster positive behavior. My project will help fund our ability to reward students for those positive behaviors with small, tangible incentives. Unfortunately, in our building funding is extremely limited, due to the high needs of the families within our school community. We have struggled in the past to consistently reward our students with the tangibles they desire, due to a simple lack of resources.
