Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students from my school live in one of the highest inner-city poverty areas in not just New York City, but in the entire nation. Many of our students are new English language learners who survive day-to-day and view coming to this public school as a positive way to escape their otherwise less than satisfactory lives. Others don't even have homes to go to!

We try our best.

We provide students with access to after-school programs, necessary technology, often even basic ADL materials, but with major budget cuts, we can no longer afford to fund many student-centered projects and sometimes the latest technology is up to teachers to explore and provide.

My Project

It is my philosophy that students will work for incentives. I teach 6th grade and this is a confusing age. They are almost grown and yet still babies. I try to keep a box stocked with all kinds of little trinkets and I work to update it as often as possible. There is something for everybody and all they need to do is see a friend with a prize from me and I already have them hooked.

The most important thing is that it works!

They do work for it. They care and with just that little bit of incentive, I can turn their school experience into something great instead of something dreaded. But it's difficult keeping it stocked with quality items. I could really use some help.
