Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

My sophomores are from more than 10 countries and speak more than 7 different languages. For some of them, this is the first time that they have dedicated independent reading time in school.

My students Fabio, Hevea, Desir and Rochto are passionate about using our stress toolboxes to self-regulate and feel more comfortable in class and at school. They want to add more items to our stress toolboxes so that students can find different ways to self-regulate in class. They have researched what items they want for the class.

In September, I began using stress toolboxes--based on a model from the Trauma Center at the Justice Resource Institute--with my high school students to create a positive mental health environment so my students can develop their English Language skills.

Thanks to Donorschoose funders, we were able to kick off with 3-4 tools in our toolbox ( slinkies, scented stickers and stress balls). These tools have become so popular that my students often ask to borrow the tools so that they can stay focused during homework time or in other classes. They are more aware of their emotions thanks to the stress toolbox and feel more in control of monitoring their anxieties and stress levels during the school day.

This toolbox will help students with self-regulation and self-monitoring so that they can focus on learning and not on the many anxieties/stresses in their lives as recent immigrants to the country. Students are also developing their leadership skills.

In Their Own Words

We want to help more students stay focused and learn English by having a variety of tools to use during work time in our class. In English class this year, we learned about how our brains don't learn as well when we are stressed and worried about our personal problems.

We are developing leadership because we will try out each stress tool and present them to our classes. We also will create a paper for students to write about what they think about the new tools. Our principal also wants to know what tools he should buy if other teachers start using these toolboxes.

First, our small group of students will try out the tools to see how they will be used. Then we will present the new stress toolbox tools to the class and talk about how students can use them and how they should use them only to stay focused not play. Finally, we will give a paper to students to write their comments about the new tools.
