My Students

I teach at a rural 1A school in southern Utah. We have a great student body which consists of about 130 students, grades 9-12. Most of the students have been together since kindergarten. We are a very close knit community. When outsiders ask where we live, the answer is usually "Wayne County" because we think of ourselves coming from the entire community, not just one town. My students are passionate about learning. They are creative and love hand-on learning.

When we went to online learning because of COVID-19, I was surprised at the reaction from my students.

They realized that they loved "being" in school. They missed the interaction with their classmates, but mostly they missed the face-to face-instruction.

My Project

My project is about creating a classroom environment that is friendly and helpful to all the students.

I am an English Teacher and along with reading and writing, I like to use hands-on creative projects to help my students learn.

Some of the projects I have done are a character analysis of Macbeth, masks for Romeo and Juliet, and illustrating their own poems. I have found that these projects help solidify the concepts I am teaching. That being said, my classroom is lacking in sufficient supplies to do these projects. I am also wanting storage containers to put the supplies in to make the storage and transporting to the different tables easier.

I also need a bluetooth speaker to put at the front of my room, instead of using the computer speaker. I have to turn my computer speaker up all the way and sometimes the students can't hear it because it is behind them. By having a bluetooth speaker, I can put it at the front of the room to make listening easier.

That last item added to my project is privacy dividers. The students sit at tables and when we are taking tests, I would like to be able to section them off to discourage cheating. Because of COVID-19, I have learned the importance of social distancing. The dividers will help with this challenge.
