This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an intervention Specialist for math in Carlsbad, New Mexico. If you look it up, our state is 50th in education. Funding just became updated in our state so it is offered to everyone equally no matter their economic background or learning needs. That's what encouraged me to come to New Mexico. Changes were on the horizon. That being said the changes are coming, but there happening slowly. As a math teacher in a resource room my students are the toughest to motivate. Thanks to the pandemic and years of being taught that they have a disability, many of them suffer from learned helplessness. This means if a problem is hard they skip it and go to the next one and say that they know they'll pass because they have learning needs. This does not help prepare them to live independently or give them the basic math skills to support themselves. My goal in my classroom is to create a positive atmosphere where students can ask questions and not feel anxiety or ridicule. Part of that is my positive behavior system. Students earn 4 points per class in being present, being prepared, being respectful, and being proud of their effort. So students get positivity every day, which has lead to an extremely high daily attendance rate and a much better environment. I buy these because I know they like them and do point spending every other week. These prizes are getting expensive for me and I've been promising some students who are saving their points that I'd get really big, really good prizes for the end of the year.
