My Project
PBIS is a program that my school implemented last year and I was able to lead the charge in my classroom by having rewards available from the start. Please help me stock up on snacks for the upcoming year. There is so much learning to be done and having positive behavior can foster an environment conducive to optimal learning.
PBIS is a proactive approach schools use to improve school safety and promote positive behavior; the focus of PBIS is prevention, not punishment.
Many kids struggle with behavior in school and when schools react only with punishment, students don’t learn the skills they need to improve; that’s where Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) comes in. According to research, PBIS leads to better student behavior. In many schools that use PBIS, students get fewer detentions and suspensions. They also earn better grades. There’s also some evidence that PBIS may lead to less bullying.
Positive behavior points are earned daily by students who commit to learning and respect the learning environment. When students earn positive behavior points, they want to spend them - that’s their reward. They love buying snacks. If there are no snack incentives available, the program doesn't work well. Positive behavior precedes uninterrupted learning, which increases retention.
My 9th graders are still adjusting to in-person school after a pandemic. They are navigating life and relationships after being quarantined for over a year. Being able to celebrate their success through PBIS rather than take a punitive approach does wonders for their mental health, and thus, fosters an encouraging learning environment.
