Portfolios for New AP Studio Art Drawing Class

My students need 12 portfolios to complete their AP drawing portfolios.

My Students

My school is a low income school in a very large city. It has 97% free and reduced lunch. Many of the students travel up to 2 hours by train and bus each way to school. Many are recent immigrants, some are documented some are not, and many speak language other then English at home.

Our school is a small public school with open enrollment.

Many students choose to travel across our city to come here because they want to get away from their neighborhoods and the problems that are hard to avoid in many of the areas they live in. We have a focus on social justice and try to incorporate it into every part of the curriculum. One way we incorporate social justice is by offering a range of AP classes. This is the first year we are offering an AP drawing class.

My Project

The students in my AP Studio Art Drawing class need nice portfolios in order to carry their work home with them on their long comments. They are required to complete 24 finished drawings throughout the year and need to work on them inside and outside of class.

My students have never had the opportunity to take AP art.

This is a chance for them to possibly earn college credit for the art they create. Many of them hope to go to art school next year and this class is providing them with a foundation of drawing and also a chance to use drawing to express who they are.
