Thanks to you, our students now have access to a diverse variety of speculative fiction books. Speculative fiction is the fantasy, the science fiction - things that ask \"What if the world was a little (or a lot) different?\" While these books do still sometimes explore identity through allegory or just outright text, oftentimes the conflict has very little to do with the character's race/gender/sexuality/neurotype/ability level/etc. And even if it does, hey, dragons! \r\n\r\nStudents have the opportunity to read a variety of diverse books for English class, but those books tend to stay in the realm of realistic historical or contemporary. Now our students can connect with the fantastical while also seeing themselves and their classmates represented. It can get exhausting for students to read about the struggles they face in real life too, so they now have a little patch of escapism to indulge in. I'm not sure if this exactly doubled the options available to students from our small school library, but if not, somewhere near it. As soon as they saw the books, I had kids asking, \"Can I borrow this?\" And there's little we love more than an enthusiastic reader.","fullyFundedDate":1760387585424,"projectUrl":"project/black-girl-magic-and-the-rest-of-us-to/9713096/","projectTitle":"Black Girl Magic (And the Rest of Us, Too)","teacherDisplayName":"Mx. My Sculpture class brought together students of vastly different backgrounds and learning abilities — and the challenge was to unite them through teaching them three-dimensional art making processes.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the wires, plaster strips, and pliers, uncertainty filled the classroom. Then as techniques clicked and sculptures took shape, excitement took over. Students from other classes would stop by and say — \"That's so cool, can I make one? \" — while my students were beaming with pride. The most repeated words I heard all year: \"I want to make one too. Can you get me into Sculpture?\"\r\n\r\nBy the end, the course had created a life-size sculpture holding a message for the whole community to read and a unique set of wire and plaster sculptures for the school community to admire. What began as uncertainty later became ownership, collaboration, and joy. I can't wait to keep providing more opportunities where the power of art making will bring students together.","fullyFundedDate":1756234607730,"projectUrl":"project/build-community-with-sculpting-skills/9612465/","projectTitle":"Build Community with Sculpting Skills","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kosa","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9761644_orig.jpg?crop=861,862,x0,y71&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1731165718914","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9761644"},{"teacherId":330792,"projectId":9926772,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generosity as this grant has been a GAME CHANGER for my students. We are using the supplies daily in order to facilitate learning. The students need to regularly engage with media in today's English classroom because so much of what we consume today is through digital media sources. \r\n\r\nA number of my students have a college class that they take over Zoom, and the headphones are in use often for this. The headphones allow them to engage with the professor and their classmates without disturbing others. They are sometimes put into breakout rooms, and at these times, headphones are crucial for students being able to engage with their small group without disturbing others in the class.\r\n\r\nThe sound bar has been a fantastic addition to my English class as we watch Macbeth while we are reading the play. The sound is much better for watching the production of the play when we use the sound bar and students are able to understand what they read after seeing and HEARING the production. We have started our student run coffee cart and the students couldn't be happier. They've done an amazing job taking on the responsibility and challenge that comes with it. It has been such an important space for our students to regulate their emotions when they need it.
