My public school students are multicultural kindergarteners through 5th graders of middle to low-income families.
This wide age range includes a wide range of reading levels and interests. Many of these students are reluctant readers who have no desire to read. With these students, getting them to listen to stories or to read anything on their own is a challenge. We need to capture their interest even with books that do not directly support the curriculum. Capturing their interest so that they practice their reading will lead to better reading skills and success in the classroom.
My Project
How can teachers and librarians attract the attention of reluctant readers? Providing eye-catching books in high-interest topics can make reading fun. This collection of books has been chosen for upper-elementary students on topics they ask for, such as coding, cooking, dance, esports, ghost stories, and aliens.

Author Rick Riordan said, “I have a great deal of sympathy for reluctant readers because I was one. I would do anything to avoid reading. In my case, it wasn’t until I was 13 and discovered The Lord of the Rings that I learned to love reading.”
This collection is designed to draw children into the world of reading before they leave elementary school. The more they read, the better they will read. The better they read, the easier it will be to pick up a book on a different topic and become immersed in the world the author paints with words. They will continue to seek out information that captures their interest and imagination and read them on their own. They will learn to love reading.
