This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The 44 library books in this project are destined for approximately 300 children in Pre-K through 1st Grade. They attend a K-8 center in South Florida, where I am the school librarian. About 84% of our kids come from households with below average income. (We are classified as a Title I school since many of our children qualify for free or reduced price lunch.)

The majority of our students are first-generation Americans.

Their parents are immigrants from the Caribbean and South America who work in low-paying jobs in the tourist trade. Over 80% of our kids speak Spanish in the home. Many of our children do not have access to English-language reading materials at home.

My Project

Our biggest need, as you can imagine, is books for tiny tots. In our Easy Book section, we have a few titles from the 'Elephant and Piggie' series. These are popular among Pre-K and Kindergarten students. Among 1st graders, the best-loved titles are from the 'Fly Guy' collection. It would be really great to have ALL of the 'Elephant and Piggie' and 'Fly Guy' books. We certainly need more books for this age range: we have approximately 300 students in Pre-K thru 1st. If we could put these 44 new titles in our library, they'd be sure to motivate our youngest readers!
