My colleague and I are both special education teachers who combine our 2nd hour classes every Wednesday and Friday in order to assist our students in making bags of popcorn for our school. Our combined class consists of 14 students from grade 6-12. Students involved have a wide range of disabilities, including, specific learning disability, autism spectrum disorder, and cognitive impairment. On Wednesdays, our students make popcorn for their peers that they sell at lunch time for $1. On Fridays, the students make and deliver popcorn to teachers and school staff who have ordered popcorn in advance. At this point in the school year, our students do the popcorn process completely on their own. However, we have had our same popcorn machine for a very long time, and it is starting to function poorly. Our students have shown an increase in leadership, teamwork, and accountability since we began this process in September. We would like to help them upgrade to a new popcorn machine.
