My Students

Can you imagine a classroom without a library? The only pleasure reading books my students have are discarded books from the media center and books I have picked up at yard sales. I would love to fix a corner of the room where they can cuddle up and "pop open a book."

We are located in West Virginia.

We are 100% free breakfast and lunch. Many of our students have at least one parent in prison. Very few homes have enough food in the house let alone books. The students in my classroom have special needs ranging from mild to moderate mental impairment. Every day is a struggle for them but they never complain. Many have never been out of our hometown. They are always eager to learn and are so proud of their accomplishments.

My Project

I would love to provide one more learning experience for my students by offering them a classroom library. We have a corner of the room all set up with a carpet, pillows and a bookcase. We just need the books! I can envision the kids lying on the floor, snuggled up with a pillow and a book, while traveling to places they would not otherwise be able to get to.

My students already know they are different from other students in the school.

They are in and out of other classrooms and see the small libraries that are set up. Not having a library of their very own sets them apart yet again. They also need the opportunity to put into practice the various reading skills and strategies they are learning on a daily basis. Many of my students come to me as emergent readers. Interaction with books will strengthen those reading skills.
