Pop-It for Math!

My Students

My second grade class is made of 28 amazing children. They range in diversity and ability. Some are Autistic, and many receive special education services. We are a Title I school, and all of my students are from low-income households, so they all receive free breakfast and lunch every day.

My students love learning, and they work very hard each day.

Their creativity inspires both me and each other. I am consistently humbled by their tenacious spirits, their loving hearts, and their curiosity about the world.

My Project

If you have spent ANY time around children lately, you have surely seen pop-its in their busy hands! I love creating hands-on learning experiences for my students, and when I discovered these pop-its with 100 "pops," I instantly knew they would be PERFECT for adding and subtracting numbers within 100, which is a main objective in second-grade math.

Instead of using hundred charts on paper or a dry-erase board, we can use these pop-its to show our starting and ending points in an exciting way.

Imagine adding 43 + 26: pop the 43, then move down two columns and over 6 spaces to pop the the sum, all using their favorite toy! And instead of having to erase, we can save time by just "un"popping and moving to the next problem.

We'll use the markers to write the numbers 1-100 on the pops to transform the toy into a hundreds chart, and we'll store them safely in the storage bins.
