Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in an urban high school where the majority of students live below the poverty line.

I have served in this district as a special education teacher for 20 years and happily continue to do so.

Teaching is my passion, my calling and I could not imagine doing anything else in this world.

My present classroom contains 10 significant intellectually disabled students, ages 17-21, of varying functioning levels. Two of my students use wheelchairs, two others use walkers, and one student is nonverbal. Many of the other students face difficulty with speech and fine motor skills and would greatly benefit from the use of technology.

By incorporating a variety of learning strategies, group work, and flexible seating and learning options will ensure that each student's needs are being met, right where they are functioning!

The use of classroom technology is key in maximizing learning potential in all subject areas.

My Project

These supplies will enable students to operate a classroom popcorn business to build their financial literacy skills. They will have hands on activities to build skills necessary to run a business including inventory, stock (bags, popcorn, oil and salt) making the popcorn (popcorn machine), counting bags, counting money, using a cash register, and communication through customer service. Students will have opportunities to learn monetary skills in order to take their turn at operating the cash register and tallying up the days profits. By running the business in small groups they will learn how to do all of the different job tasks of the business.

The money generated from the popcorn sales will be used to maintain business supplies to keep the business going and generate a classroom fund to assist with all other facets of adult daily living such as cooking lessons, community experiences etc.

The best way to teach students about financial literacy is to allow them to explore every facet of money through group activities, independent activities, hands on, and one on one instruction.

These supplies help meet all those areas plus gives them a great start on this business adventure.
