Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are very inquisitive about science though they haven't had a class that has sparked a deeper love for it. In my science elective class, I would like to expose my students to various science experiments that they might not otherwise experience on their own.
My students live in a very low income community in which gang related criminal activity is common place.
Their parents lack the means to expose their children to scientific inquiry. In addition, my students are English Learners who lack the ability to comprehend difficult scientific text on their own.
With budget deficits in our district, it is difficult to come by educational materials. My school would not be able to provide my class with the materials I need for this experiment (polyurethane foam system and gloves).
My Project
My students will learn about the chemical reaction created when the polyurethane solution is mixed and stirred. They will learn about and use the scientific method as well as write about their experience. The amount of polyurethane foam system I am requesting will ensure that all of my students will get to experience this experiment. The disposable gloves will be used as protection against the solution since it can irritate the skin. After the students mix the solution and they get a chemical reaction, the product will be a solid foam item which will be decorated.
As English Learners, my students are limited on what they can read and comprehend.
Some science books can be very wordy for them which can make them lose interest. In having a hands on experiment, they can get to see science first hand. This will foster the curiosity that they already possess about science.
They will also be able to practice the writing process as well as use academic language.
